Ad platforms and their AI

Every campaign starts on an ad platform, and the platforms themselves now ship most of the AI that advertisers use. Google, Microsoft, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Amazon and Pinterest each run their own auction, sell their own placements and offer their own automated campaign types.

The direction is the same on all of them. Advertisers set a goal, a budget and a pool of creative, and the platform decides who sees which ad, where and at what bid. Google calls its version Performance Max, Meta uses the Advantage+ name, and the others have similar options. Fewer settings are left in your hands, and the platform reports less detail about where money went.

That trade can work well for an account with clean conversion data and enough volume for the system to learn from. It works badly when conversion tracking counts the wrong things, such as page views or duplicate form fills, because the system will optimize toward whatever you report. The first job on any platform is to make sure the conversion you report is the one you care about.

Each platform suits different intent. Search ads on Google and Microsoft reach people who are actively looking for something. Social platforms reach people based on interests and behavior, so creative carries more of the weight. LinkedIn targets by job and company, which suits business-to-business offers with higher prices. Amazon and other retail media reach shoppers on the store where they buy.

Small advertisers usually do better on one or two platforms done carefully than on five done thinly. Pick the platform where your buyers already look for what you sell, learn its reports, and add the next one once the first is steady.

Budgets behave differently on each platform. Search ads spend only when someone searches a keyword you bid on, so a small daily budget can last. Social and video platforms spend against impressions or broad audiences, so a test needs enough budget and time for the system to find people who respond. Set a test budget you can afford to lose, decide in advance how long it runs, and judge it on cost per real lead or sale.

Read each platform's policies before you write ads. Restricted categories such as health, finance, housing, employment and alcohol come with extra rules, and some need certification before ads run at all.

Questions about ad platforms and their ai

Should I use Performance Max or Advantage+ campaigns?

They can work when conversion tracking is accurate and the budget is large enough for the system to learn. Start with a clear conversion goal, add your own creative, and compare results with a standard campaign before moving most of your budget.

Is Microsoft Advertising worth it next to Google Ads?

For many advertisers it adds extra volume, often at a lower cost per click, from people searching on Bing and partner sites. The import tool copies your Google campaigns, so testing it takes little setup.

Why does the platform keep changing my account?

Google Ads and some other platforms can apply recommendations automatically. Check the auto-applied recommendations setting and turn off the types you want to review yourself.

Which platform should a small business start with?

Start where your customers already search or browse for what you sell. For most local services that is Google search ads; for visual products it is often Meta or Pinterest.
